'I'm Bad at This' by The Claudettes - Digital Single

$1.50

I'M BAD AT THIS

Claudettes songwriter/pianist Johnny Iguana was half-listening to Marketplace on NPR radio. The host started talking about the "Footsie." Johnny had no idea what that was (he later learned that it refers to the FTSE: the Financial Times Stock Exchange 100 Index), but it got him to thinking about embarrassing flirting failures. The song follows the narrator as she admits to being an inept flirter, while also holding out hope that she will someday find someone equally woeful at wooing--and, thus, a perfect match.

The Sound of the Track
Johnny Iguana and Berit Ulseth recorded the piano and vocals first, followed by overdubs of drums, bass and Bass VI guitar. The final touches, at Anthony Gravino's studio "The Drake" in Chicago, were the guitar and percussion overdubs, which added galloping country-pop touches to the production. Layered "ooh" vocals and Mellotron strings were also added, giving the track a classic Vocal Pop sound. Finally, renowned producer Kevin Killen mixed the track, putting the vocal layers in the forefront and sewing all the elements together into an elegant vintage pop package.
